Free African American Health Program Community Day, Saturday, April 16th

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay will be sponsoring the African American Health Program (AAHP) Community Day on April 16th, 2016. The event is free and open to individuals and families of all ages. Attendees will experience the “Taste of Nutrition,” energizing group fitness activities, and health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, prostate cancer, and others.

The AAHP Community Day will host and serve as the official Maryland location for the official 5K Walk/Run: National African American Male Wellness Walk Initiative, which aims to emphasize the importance of health education, prevention and awareness for African American males. Those interested in attending this year’s AAHP Community Day or 5K Walk/Run, can register here.

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay has been a long time leader in the Chesapeake Bay restoration community. We have been central to bringing various partners together to address many challenging environmental issues. In particular, we have been responding to the needs of communities across the watershed for a very long time. When community members highlighted the need for watershed groups to make strides toward diversity and inclusion during the drafting of the 2014 Watershed Agreement, we have been responding. This past February, Alliance staff working on the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Diversity Action Team organized a career fair for the Audubon Naturalist Society Black History Month Celebration.

Additionally, we have been utilizing our Annual Chesapeake Watershed Forum as a platform to highlight community interests to environmental organizations. Read about how the Alliance made the connection to watershed communities at the 2014 Watershed Forum at allianceforthebay.org
