Meet The Staff: Joan Smedinghoff
Meet our Web Content Specialist for the Chesapeake Bay Program
based out of the Maryland Office
Joan joins the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay as the Web Content Specialist for the Chesapeake Bay Program. She’s originally from Chicago, but moved to the watershed to attend Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, where she majored in environmental studies.
While at Dickinson, she worked at the Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM), where she spent three years working on communications and outreach. There, she learned first-hand the value of crafting messages for specific audiences as she worked to reach out to ALLARM’s three very different audiences of college students, local homeowners, and citizen scientists.
Her work at ALLARM led her further down the watershed to the Chesapeake Research Consortium, where she spent two years as the Communications Staffer at the Chesapeake Bay Program. After spending time upstream, she was fascinated to learn more about the Bay itself and see how the partnership as a whole is working to restore the watershed.
She’s excited to now be able to join the Alliance team and to continue to serve at the Bay Program in a new capacity.
Outside of work, she likes hiking, reading, traveling, and trying new foods. When she’s not exploring the DMV area or cheering on the Cubs, she’s working on becoming fluent in German.
