Tree Program Volunteer (Job Opening)

Job Description

This volunteer will support the needs of the Trees for Sacred Places program. The volunteer will play a crucial role within the Maryland staff team in its ongoing efforts to plant over 1,500 trees at Houses of Worship throughout Maryland. This is an opportunity for a “budding” environmental scientist to gain experience with volunteer coordination, tree planting designs, site assessments and planting day logistical planning.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with weekend Tree Plantings (1 day a weekend)
  • Assist with site preparation
  • Conduct site visits
  • Assist in production of Planting and Maintenance Plans
  • Assist with any other projects as needed

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year experience (such as internship, undergraduate or graduate work) working in the environmental field
  • Knowledge of GIS a plus
  • Strong interest in environmental and social issues, preferably related to the Chesapeake Bay
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills
  • Creative thinker
  • Must have own car
  • Physical requirements – Applicants must be able to lift and carry objects up 50 pounds and able to stand and walk for extended periods, sometimes through rough terrain in variable weather conditions


The volunteer reports directly to the Alliance’s Maryland Program Coordinator while receiving guidance from the Alliance’s Maryland Program Manager.


The volunteer is based at the Alliance’s headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland with an ability to travel throughout the State as needed.

Type of Position:

The volunteer position is a part-time position working approximately 20-24 hours per week through December 1, 2016.


This is an unpaid volunteer position, travel is compensated.
