Meet The Staff: Jamie Alberti

Meet our Green Infrastructure Senior Projects Manager
based out of the DC Office

Jamie grew up in Harford County, Maryland and has very fond memories of playing outdoors and exploring the surrounding area, from feeding horses to hiking along a small stream in the woods. She relocated to Northern Virginia in 2001.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in Ecology and Population Biology from Loyola University Maryland, and a Masters of Education from the University of Mary Washington. She also became a certified teacher in secondary science education. She has worked as a biology teacher and an “English as a second language” teacher in the Prince William County school system in Virginia.

Her love for the outdoors, and particularly the Chesapeake, stemmed from a two-week trip she took as a young girl traversing the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake, from Elk Neck State Park to Smith Island.  Jamie loved the entire experience—from sailing, to fishing, to marsh mucking!  She is passionate not only about helping to restore the Chesapeake and its tributaries, but also about educating the general public and encouraging them to do the same.

Jamie began her career with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay when she was at Loyola in early 1998. She volunteered in the Alliance’s main office and then completed an internship through Loyola. Upon graduation, she officially joined the Alliance and worked on numerous projects including BayScape, tree and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) installations, coordination of river sojourns, education and outreach within DC public schools, and oversight of a rain barrel distribution effort in DC.  She briefly left the Alliance to teach high school in 2005, but rejoined the Alliance in 2008 to serve as Program Coordinator for the RiverSmart Homes program.

Jamie is currently leads the RiverSmart Homes program for the Alliance in partnership with the District Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE).  The RiverSmart programs provide financial incentives to DC homeowners to install environmentally friendly landscape practices, such as rain gardens, BayScaping, rain barrels, and pervious pavers, on their properties to help reduce stormwater runoff.  Her current position with the Alliance allows her to combine watershed restoration with environmental education opportunities.  Jamie’s next focus will be in addresses the challenges regarding maintenance of installed practices and drawing local communities into community networking events to share experiences and build environmental stewardship.

Jamie had the unique opportunity to live overseas for four years, first in Okinawa and then Italy. Immersion in several different cultures and communities has made her appreciate the Chesapeake watershed’s many remarkable facets and has renewed her commitment to the protection of such an amazing resource.  Jamie currently lives in Northern VA with her husband and two terrific kids.  She loves animals and has two cats.  She enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, from visiting Civil War battlefields to camping to just finding a nice spot for a picnic and a pick-up soccer game.  On cold or rainy days, she likes to curl up and read a good book or share some popcorn with the family over a movie.
