For the past four years, the Alliance’s Agriculture team worked with an organic dairy farm in Lancaster County, PA, and last year, this nutrient reduction project was completed! Mr. Abner Stotlzfus, a Plain Sect farmer, operates a 40-cow organic dairy, supplying high-quality milk to Organic Valley.

Indigenous people understood the importance of sustainability and stewardship, and occupied the Susquehanna River Valley as early as 16,000 years ago during the “Paleo-Indian” era.
In 1985, a small group of passionate community members gathered along the shores of Chesapeake Bay tributaries, monitoring kits and clipboards in hand, ready to collect powerful scientific data. With over 100,000 stream miles throughout Virginia, the Alliance recognized major gaps in where agencies were able to collect data.

Today, Marylanders can count on our farmers to produce a wide array of signature crops, from poultry and produce on the Eastern Shore to apple butter and ice cream in Frederick and Washington Counties.
Pennsylvania offers abundant opportunities for agriculture conservation; it’s home to over 49,000 farms, covering 7 million acres. Running through these acres is an abundant network of waterways that ultimately feed into the Chesapeake Bay. PA has about 85,500 miles of rivers and streams which supply over 2,000,000 acres of lakes, bays, and wetlands.
Since launching our Richmond-based agriculture team in 2021, the Alliance has expanded its efforts across the Commonwealth of Virginia, working closely with farmers and rural landowners from all corners of the state.
The Alliance hosted the Symposium on Emerging Contaminants in the Bay, in partnership with Morgan State University. This groundbreaking event highlighted cutting-edge research, innovative solutions, and collaborative strategies for tackling issues related to emerging contaminants.
The methods used to farm have lasting impacts on water and habitat quality, animal welfare, farmers’ livelihoods, and access to fresh foods.
