Environmental Projects Intern, Alex DuBuclet, from Bowie State University, has concluded another semester with the Alliance! Join us, as Alex tells us about their Capstone Project from this semester.
In 2024, the Alliance was awarded $3.9 million by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to construct a nearly three-quarter-mile-long living shoreline on a family-run heritage farm. The project will help reduce wave energy arriving from the 33-mile fetch that’s causing the farm to lose roughly 10 feet of shoreline per year.

When it comes to clean water, diverse communities require diverse solutions. Spanning more than 64,000 square miles across six states and the District of Columbia, the Chesapeake Bay watershed is home to roughly 1,800 local governments. At this vast scale, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to achieving clean water.

This past June, I attended my first Bernie Fowler Wade-In on the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland. I was grateful to be in community with other clean water champions, carrying on important traditions. As a community, we collected one more piece of evidence that together, we can go farther.
Thank you to everyone who made the 2024 Volunteer Tree Planting Relay (Treelay) possible! Over the course of 24 hours, Alliance staff, partners, and 213 dedicated volunteers planted 4,200 trees in Pennsylvania and Maryland. That’s one tree every 21.6 seconds!
