Meet The Staff: Sophie Stern
Meet our RiverTrends Coordinator
based out of the Virginia Office
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Sophie spent her childhood enjoying all that the Midwest has to offer with her parents, two brothers, and dogs. Needing a change of scenery, she headed to the mountains for college, landing at the University of Vermont and earning a B.S. in Natural Resource Planning. She served as an SCA AmeriCorps member in state and and national parks all over the country, teaching environmental education, building trails, and conducting field research. She eventually found herself in Pittsburgh and spent time reconnecting with plants while working at a botanical garden before reaching her current destination in Richmond where she learned to love all things water. She has spent the last two years in Richmond in the non-profit sector managing various volunteer programs to connect people to the outdoors and to protect the James River and it’s tributaries.
Sophie joined the Alliance in June 2019 as the RiverTrends Coordinator. She is looking forward to continue to motivate citizen scientists to connect with their waterways and provide essential data for improving water quality throughout the Chesapeake Bay.
When not plotting to restore watersheds, you can find Sophie biking, hiking, running, sewing, identifying trees, or rock hopping by the river with her dog, Pinecone.
