Attorney, McGuire Woods, LLP

Heather has fond memories of many summers spent sailing on the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay with family and friends. Her formative years on the water spurred a 40-year career working in the environmental field, whether as a biologist or a lawyer.

Currently, Heather is an attorney with McGuireWoods LLP, where she counsels clients on environmental permitting and regulatory compliance issues as well as advises on environmental considerations in business transactions. She earned a J.D. from the University of Richmond in 2000, a Master of Environmental Management degree from Duke University specializing in Natural Resource Ecology in 1983, and her Bachelor of Science degree from the College of William and Mary in 1981.

Prior to practicing law, Heather held several environmental specialist and legal intern roles at state and federal agencies, including the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, St. Johns River Water Management District, Virginia Department of Transportation, United States Environmental Protection Agency, and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. She utilizes the experience gained in each of these positions to navigate state and federal environmental regulations as well as maintain longstanding, productive working relationships with agency officials.

Heather appreciates the opportunity to serve on the Alliance’s board of directors as she has admired the strong relationships with stakeholders in the Bay watershed, and looks forward to further bolstering those in support of the Alliance’s mission of achieving healthier and resilient lands and cleaner water.
