Jim is a lifelong farmer from the rolling hills of Blair County, PA. His conservation journey began at age 13 when he told his dad that he should fence the cows out of Clover Creek, which runs through their property. The next 30 years were devoted to observing and learning, including a degree in Agricultural Engineering from PSU with an emphasis on agronomy along with soil & waters. In that timeframe, Jim also opened a retail farm store and added crop consulting as a CCA.
In 2000, the opportunity came for Jim’s family to manage the farm, and a plethora of BMP’s have been implemented since then. Unsurprisingly, all streams are fenced and include riparian buffers. Clover Creek is now classified as HQCWF, and all 800 acres are no-tilled and are green year-round. Pollinators and Wildlife Habitats have been established on marginal soils and GPS field mapping has been completed on all other acres so that nutrients are only applied at variable rates where needed for each crop. Jim manages the cropping for the 500 cows that are managed by his son Josh and wife Amanda.
Jim holds the title of chair of the Blair County Conservation District where he’s been a director since 1992. Jim and his wife Carol enjoy traveling in the US and overseas occasionally during the winter months and have been known to attend concerts from 60’s and 70’s musical artists.
