This month as part of our 50 stories for our 50th Anniversary, we are celebrating our upcoming Annual Watershed Forum while taking a look back at the past 15. The following audio clip is taken from an interview with Charlie Conklin. Charlie is a former Board Member, Watershed Forum planning team member, and long-time supporter, of the Alliance. Since being involved with the Alliance since the 90s, Charlie still names helping plan the Chesapeake Watershed Forum as one of his favorite memories.
The Chesapeake Bay Watershed Forum is a reminder to me, and so many others of why I joined the environmental field, and plan to stay in it for the entirety of my career. There is tough work to be done, but we stand a better chance at success when we come together. In my eyes, the Watershed Forum is the glue of the watershed.
Forests for the Bats, a Halloween takeover of the Alliance’s Forests for the Bay newsletter, is all about celebrating our Chesapeake forests and the peak of autumn, which is largely our favorite time to be in the woods.
The Alliance is saddened by the loss of the Virginia conservation giant, Tayloe Murphy, who passed away on September 15th. Tayloe served in many roles in his esteemed career, and was honored by the Alliance in 2006 with our “Frances Flanigan Environmental Leadership Award” for all he has done for the Chesapeake Bay. To honor Tayloe, Nissa Dean, Virginia State Director, wrote a tribute to her personal hero and mentor.

The River Sojourns were week-long paddling trips that connected community members with their local waterways. Starting in the 90s, the sojourns occurred annually for about 10 years on the Susquehanna, Potomac, and Patuxent Rivers as an opportunity for people young, old, and everywhere in between to connect with nature. Staff member, Jamie Alberti reflects on her experience as staff leader on the River Sojourns and her major takeaways. Jamie encourages everyone to get outside, experience nature in any way that they can, and create some memories.
