RiverSmart Maintenance Assistance Program

Providing Free Assistance to RiverSmart Homeowners

The RiverSmart Maintenance Assistance Program (RSMAP) assists property owners with the maintenance of their installed RiverSmart rain gardens and BayScapes.  The program offers free advice from the RSMAP team in three simple steps.

  • First, submit a question through this link YOUR MAINTENANCE QUESTIONS. Please provide as much detail as possible regarding the issue with which you would like help, and include the original plant installation plan if you have it.
  • Second, a RSMAP team member will respond to your inquiry within 3 business days. For  more complex issues, we may have additional questions for you or ask for photos to assist in finding a solution.
  • Third, after your issue has been resolved we will ask for feedback about RSMAP through an online survey. Your experience and opinions are critical to helping us improve the program and sustain funding.

For additional maintenance assistance, see the Resources Section below or get in with touch with us directly – maintenance@allianceforthebay.org / (443) 449-8230.

The RSMAP is a program of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and Urban Ecosystem Restorations (UER), a nonprofit urban land trust that helps people preserve and care for Eco-Functioning Spaces in the D.C. region. Eco-Functioning Spaces are value-enhancing urban green spaces that perform ecological functions. The 2020 RSMAP is supported through grant funding provided by the District Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE).

“The RiverSmart Maintenance Assistance Team is fantastic! They were so helpful in the email correspondence and phone. They were very responsive and accommodated my tricky schedule with an infant. They provided great information and guidance for a way forward to fix our rain garden.”

Additional Maintenance Resources

How to GuidesThe RSMAP has developed a number of maintenance guides with instructions for garden and plant care. Check back regularly for updates to this information.

Native Plant SelectionWhether you are replacing native plants in a rain garden or BayScape, it is important to have the right plant in the right place. RSMAP’s native plant lists are based on selections that have been successful in RiverSmart gardens and include information on the best plants for specific locations in your garden, bloom color and season, and the habitat provided by specific plants for birds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

Maintenance Contractors – If you need the help of a professional landscaper for on-site maintenance work, RSMAP has compiled a list of qualified maintenance contractors who are familiar with RiverSmart gardens. The 2020 RSMAP is not directly involved with delivery of on-site maintenance services, the list is simply another resource available to you through the program. Interested homeowners should contact these contractors directly to find out about pricing and availability. Typical maintenance work includes: invasive weed removal, mulching, pruning, correcting rain garden issues, planting, thinning, and transplanting.

RiverSmart Rain Garden
“My rain garden was installed in May 2014 and is in need of some minor maintenance. The berms of the rain garden have eroded and the interior of the garden had filled with leaf and other debris, reducing its capacity to retain water. The overflow pipe from the rain barrel and the sump in the rain garden were in good shape. The BayScaping is fine – just needed some sprucing up. I elected to use the Level 3 Maintenance Services and was happy with the results.”
