RiverWise Congregations

There are thousands of houses of worship in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, all of which contribute to stormwater runoff into our streams, rivers, and the Bay. The RiverWise Congregations program works to engage these institutions in the stormwater narrative by conducting outreach through the partnership, listening to the needs of the congregation, establishing a stormwater BMP plan for their house of worship, connecting stewardship of our natural resources to their belief systems, and challenging them to continue this level of stewardship to their personal lives and properties.

Each interested house of worship  receives a stormwater site assessment conducted by a Stormwater Professional in collaboration with a trained AAWSA Master Watershed Steward using a localized version of our Bay Program-approved RiverWise Communities assessment protocol. This concludes with a detailed plan to trap and treat stormwater flowing from their property. Site specific BMP techniques are suggested via the assessment, but will include (among other Bay Program approved practices) rain gardens, cisterns, and the removal of impervious pavement. The plan also includes behaviors that can be adopted to reduce the effects of stormwater including: the proper use of fertilizer, reduced pesticide use, and the proper maintenance of existing parking lots and stormwater retention facilities.

The partners for this program include: the Alliance, Anne Arundel Watershed Stewards Academy (AAWSA), and Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake (IPC).
