Eleni grew up on the water on Long Island, enjoying crabbing off her parents’ dock as well as fishing for fluke, flounder, and stripers in the Great South Bay. She left New York to attend college and has lived in seven states since then. She didn’t learn to fully appreciate nature until she drove cross-country with friends a year after graduating. She fell in love with the west and the mountains, and she loves that Maryland has both the water and the mountains within its borders.
Eleni graduated from American University in 1999 and received her B.A. in Public Communication with a minor in Graphic Design. She has worked at several non-profits across the U.S., including Wolf Park in Indiana, the Student Conservation Association Fire Education Corps in Nevada and Idaho, and HawkWatch International in Utah. She returned to American University in 2006 to obtain a M.A. degree in Teaching English Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). She spent four years teaching ESL to middle schoolers in Washington, DC.
Prior to joining the Alliance, Eleni was a stay-at-home mom to her to two boys. During that time, she played professional women’s football for the DC Divas, was a board member at the Ss. Constantine & Helen Preschool, President of the Greek School, and conducted therapy visits for Fidos for Freedom with her Rottweiler/Mastiff mix, Dozer. She was also a site captain for annual ACB Project Clean Stream events in her neighborhood. At the time she didn’t know she was destined to work for the Alliance!
Eleni works to support the CEO and Annapolis office by managing office administrative tasks, coordinating all Board activities and annual staff events, assisting with Project Clean Stream, the Wild & Scenic Film Festival and Taste of the Chesapeake, as well as helping with HR and the hiring process. She loves that every day is different at a non-profit and enjoys pitching in wherever help is needed.
In her free time she can be found playing hockey and soccer, and is learning how to box. She loves getting out for a hike and exploring new places. In addition to Dozer, she also has a cat, Sweet Pea, and the newest addition, Strawberry the hamster.
