The Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) met on November 29-30, 2012 in Havre de Grace, MD and toured the hydroelectric facility at the Conowingo Dam. Exelon Corporation hosted the committee at the visitor’s center for a lively panel discussion on the Conowingo Dam including the upcoming federal re-licensing of the facility for the next 30-46 years and the sediment build-up behind the dam and associated impact on water quality.

Panelists included representatives from Exelon Corp, MD DNR Power Plant Research Program, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Susquehanna River Basin Commission and the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper. As a result of the meeting, the CAC members encouraged the EPA to become actively engaged in the re-licensing of the Conowingo hydroelectric project on the Susquehanna River and help ensure that the final license or settlement agreement approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) includes plans to manage, mitigate or remove the massive amount of sediment accumulated behind the dam.
