Trees for Sacred Places

Trees for Sacred Places

Since the fall of 2013, the Alliance has worked with the Interfaith Partners of the Chesapeake to engage people of faith in planting over 12,000 trees throughout Maryland! With trees getting in the ground, houses of worship are contributing to watershed restoration, environmental stewardship, and community building.

More Houses Of Worship Needed To Plant Trees!

The program is ongoing and we are seeking congregations to plant trees on their property in all of Maryland and with a focus in Prince George’s County and Montgomery County.

This ambitious program offers houses of worship the following:

  • Educational workshops on the importance of tree planting in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed
  • Hands-on training for tree planting and maintenance
  • Spiritual workshops to explore the faith teachings on stewardship along with the spiritual meaning of trees and water in faith traditions
  • Crew leaders to guide the houses of worship volunteers on the planting day
  • And, of course, FREE trees!

How Does Our House Of Worship Get Started?

Check out this Step-by-Step Guide about the Trees for Sacred Places Program on how to get started and walk through the process.

After you sign up, we will discuss planting plans, species selection, the faith-based environmental education workshop which accompanies the tree planting, and scheduling. Plantings will occur during Spring and Fall 2016 and 2017.

Please spread the word that we have space for more houses of worship in this program. You can use our flyer (below) to share this project with your community or tell someone else about it who might be interested.

Need help having the conversation in your house of worship about bringing this program home? We can help with that!

Funding for this program has come from Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources and the Chesapeake Bay Trust.
